All of Us Need True Friends

"All of us will be tested.  All of us need true friends to love us, to listen to us, to show us the way, to testify of truth to us." Henry B. Eyring

In high school, I had a friend that changed my world. He knew I was struggling, and he didn't judge me for it. He continued to love and be there for me. ⠀

There was a multi-stake fireside coming up and I really didn't want to go. It was at the end of my senior year, and I was struggling whether or not I was going to serve a mission. All of my friends were headed off to college and preparing to serve. I didn't want to face any questions, so I didn't want to go.⠀

This friend of mine wanted to go and he wanted me to go with him. I told him no, and he kept asking. I finally had to be firm and let him know I wasn't going. I thought that was settled. I was wrong.⠀

The day of the fireside, I was up in my room. I heard a knock at our door. My mom answered and I went back to doing what I was doing. Before I knew it, my mom and my friend were standing at my bedroom door. My friend was dressed and ready to go to this fireside. He looked at me and told me to get moving so we could make it on time. I was annoyed and told him for the 100th time I would not be going. He smiled at me, loosened his tie and said, "then I will stay here with you." He wasn't joking around. He took off his tie and sat down.⠀

Now, I KNEW he wanted to go and had been planning on it for a long, long time. I couldn't let him miss it. Begrudgingly, I agreed to get dressed and go with him. He just smiled and said he would meet me downstairs. He won, and this one decision changed my life.⠀

I went to that fireside because of this friend, and had a complete change of heart. The fireside was about having faith and overcoming challenges. It was about knowing Heavenly Father never, ever gives up on us. It was music to my ears. ⠀

This friend of mine went on to serve an incredible mission in Germany and now is a very successful dentist. He is still an amazing friend. I'm so thankful Heavenly Father allowed me to have him in my life. I needed his friendship. He saw me not how I was, but what I could become. I honor him today and strive to be the type of friend to others, that he was for me.⠀
